Here We Are

Meet the Band

We are a homeschooling family of free spirited folks that include three vivacious young boys. We go where the wind blows on any given day, and do our best to live each moment fully.  We have been on this path for 5 years, and have found that no two days, weeks, months or years find us in the same place. We move from wild and crazy to peaceful and serene  like night follows day.

Serendipity
Let's face it, there are many unknowns in life. We carefully construct plans, work hard to attain goals, and then, upon reaching them, discover we are not where we had once envisioned ourselves. This can be serendipitous, in that somewhere along the way, the trail veered,  opening up to  a field we hadn't known existed, but what our soul had craved all along the way. I  diligently worked to be a teacher,  in a school. I did that for one short year before moving about the field trying to find the right fit. In that journey,  I was unknowingly preparing for a whole new purpose. It was not until my first born son, now 9, approached school age  that we discovered we wanted a non traditional education for him. He was a child who still had many years of youth , curiosity, energy, and  zest. Traditional approaches would seep those qualities from him and try to mold him into what he is not.  Schools were not  approaching teaching the way I had once learned was "best" in order to meet the needs of each learner, support various learning styles, and most importantly, provide developmentally appropriate material and atmosphere.  And so it began.  I felt "lucky" to have  taken the path which had gotten me here, prepared to provide  a life fostering a love for learning, yet the understanding of our education system. Over time, we have re-sculpted our approach to learning, wavering between structure and routine and un-schooling. I've found that sometimes, what we want isn't always what works the best. We have landed mainly in a very interest driven, eclectic approach. We provide minimal structure to create the safety of routine, yet allow for an abundance of open-ended time for exploration and play. Trust and uncertainty are two big companions on this journey. It is a never-ending state of maintaining mindfulness and purpose to each and every day.
